Sure, the summer has never been the most lively time for game developers and publishers to come out swinging; nevertheless, there have always been at least a few notable titles to hit store shelves and digital marketplaces alike amidst the heat. I personally loved and continue to love my time with “Super Mario Maker 2” capping off June and recently found myself very invested in the brutal action of “Wolfenstein: Youngblood” making the last two months at least somewhat impactful for game releases for me. This month may just step it up tenfold though with more than a couple of games that are genuinely on my radar. Read on to see what games of August 2019 I'm most excited for and why. Then be sure to leave me your own list or single game that has you the most hyped in this swansong of summer.
There are five games on my radar this month and none of them will be out until the end of August. The first game I want to shed light on is something that I am as skeptical as I am interested. “Pokemon Masters” is coming to iOS and Android on August 29. This mobile game could be chock-full of microtransactions and other devious practices of the market. However, this new take on one of my most revered IP in gaming may also be quite awesome. With the push to include dozens of familiar and iconic characters alone, fans should chew this one right up. “Pokemon Masters” has the benefit of the franchise's legacy behind it. With a unique take on battling, collecting and teaming up, I think this should be an interesting and potentially really fun game to fire up on a moment’s notice.
While I am very interested in that “Pokemon” title, it certainly isn’t up there with the bigger console games I look forward to tackling before returning to school. Releasing a day later, Xbox and PC players can look forward to a game adaptation of “Blair Witch.” Switch owners will be able to dive into “Astral Chain” from PlatinumGames.
I don’t usually play survival horror games. Whether it is because of a low key fear of being jump scared or because of the type of fun I like in games rarely exist in the genre, I usually skip them. “Blair Witch,” a game that came out of nowhere, does look good though. I think the film’s found-footage style should make for a very engrossing horror title. I found the E3 2019 trailer captivating and I am for some reason kind of interesting in playing “Blair Witch.”
The ladder of games I mentioned coming on the 30th of August has my attention a lot more. I am a fan of much of Platinum’s work. The action genre is inherently my favorite. Whether we are talking “Bayonetta” or my personal favorite sleeper hit, “Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance,” I love the way they craft action games. “Astral Chain” benefits from having a unique type of presence with police at center stage alongside monsters. The game has super flashy visuals and a creative direction. I think it will be a lot of fun and the deep and wild combat and systems of “Astral Chain” has me very excited to play this Switch Exclusive for sure.
There are but two more games coming out this month that have me, in many ways, more excited than what dropped earlier in 2019. The first of which is Remedy’s “Control.” The developers behind very stylish, compelling and cool action-adventure games like “Quantum Break” and “Alan Wake” are back with something that really has my attention. I am super interested in this game’s narrative and gameplay alike. “Control” upon its debut, gave me vibes of “InFamous” alongside the aforementioned titles from the developers. I am ready for a cool story about the supernatural and the many abilities I will be able to wield as I play through what will surely be one of this year’s coolest campaigns around.
Lastly, thanks entirely to my love for “Until Dawn,” Supermassive has me ready for another chilling adventure. “The Dark Pictures Anthology” is set to have a new title release as early as every six months and while that seems unnecessary, I am all in for this type of storied approach. I am genuinely excited to play through the first being “Man of Medan.” This game is another thriller of a story with horrifying things on a boat. The plot stars young adults like myself and will feature many choices, plenty of which will mean life or death. The approach to storytelling that 2015’s “Until Dawn” capitalized on looks to return and I am all in on August 30 to be terrified and to do all in my power to save everyone around me.
So those are the upcoming games I look forward to in August. “Pokemon Masters” is something I am excited to try, despite some justifiable skepticism. “Blair Witch” is a game that I may man up and give a chance to. I am likely going to dive right into “Astral Chain” thanks to the track record of fun action behind its developers. And then “Control” and “Man of Medan” are practically must-plays for me, day one purchases. I am super excited for those games’ stories, particularly the narrative devices “Man of Medan” will include.
So be sure to join me in the comment below and tell me what game or games you will be playing this month. Which August 2019 game will be your cap off to summer? What are you most excited for? What games did I miss? Leave me all your thoughts and let’s have a lively discussion about all things August in gaming!
