This year saw plenty of hotly anticipated games release. We finally got a proper “Devil May Cry” sequel, “Borderlands” returned better than ever and Electronic Arts released a single player “Star Wars” game with no loot boxes or microtransactions. But 2019 had a lot of titles set to be out before the end of the year. As Thanksgiving is over and December is here, it is sad to see a list of games that are set for a 2019 release to have no release dates. It is pretty safe to assume they aren’t making that deadline afterall. These are some of those games.
Babylon’s Fall
“Babylon’s Fall” was teased at E3 2018 as a new project from PlatinumGames, published by Square Enix. The title’s trailer looked very interesting and had me super excited for whatever it could be.
Being developed by people who know how to make awesome action games, I was already ready to know more. And “Babylon’s Fall” was set for a 2019 release on PC and PlayStation 4. Now that it is December, it is sad but safe to say we will be getting no such thing in 2019. At this point however, I’d rather it be a PS5 and Scarlet title anyway.
Battletoads
Rare’s classic tough-as-nails platformer was set to make a huge return this year. Simply titled “Battletoads” as far as one can tell, the game was announced at E3 2018. A year later, Microsoft properly revealed it. While divisive, I overall found myself excited for it more than scared of the return of Rash, Zitz and Pimple.
This new “Battletoads” game however never got a release date. It is one of those games that was set to be out in 2019 and I honestly expected it to be out this holiday season. The safest release window for a game like this is difficult with so many big triple A titles out all of the time but maybe “Battletoads” would be safest launching with the next generation of Xbox.
Biomutant
THQ is a company that has been all over the place and maybe that has something to do with “Biomutant” and how it seems like it is never released. This game got announced only in 2017 so it is not really all that absurd for it to not be out yet. The thing is, “Biomutant” was confidently set for a 2018 release. Then it was confidently set for a 2019 release. So despite the fact that it hasn’t been a long time of waiting, it is still making games, myself included, more and more anxious for the eventual release.
I personally am very excited for “Biomutant” for the character creation and customization, in addition to the action RPG gameplay and world building. So I hope we get this game soon. A part of me can actually see it releasing before the next generation of consoles but an equal part certainly sees it as a game we will be talking about in the same vein right now next year.
Dreams
Media Molecule has been talking about and showing off “Dreams” for what seems like forever. The creation hub was announced as far back as the beginning of the PlayStation 4’s life cycle. “Dreams” was supposed to be out by nw surely but it always managed to get delayed.
Today, we are about a year out from the PlayStation 5’s launch. It is hard to imagine that “Dreams” gets a proper release on the PS4 at this point. It was most recently set to be out in 2019, out of beta, in full. Unfortunately, I find it hard to believe Media Molecule’s proper release is anytime too soon. But I can see “Dreams” eventually taking the world by storm using the PS5 to full effect.
In the Valley of Gods
After “Firewatch” saw success, the developers, Campo Santo, became prominent names for the indie scene. Their next title, “In the Valley of Gods,” was revealed two years ago at the Game Awards. It looked very promising in its beautiful art direction and the interesting inspirations behind said style guide.
The game, once set for a 2019 release for PC, is looking less and less promising as of late. And that is not to say the quality of “In the Valley of Gods” doesn’t look good, but the actual release is the concern. With a recent lack of reference to the game in lead developers’ bios on social media and trailer footage seemingly missing online, it a fear for many that “In the Valley of Gods” is closer to a delay than a release. Time will tell for this one but hopefully Campo Santo will get to execute this compelling and visually appealing product when they are ready.
Hollow Knight: Silksong
In 2017 and 2018, “Hollow Knight” was on everyone’s mind. It was one of the most popular indie games on PC launch and its Switch debut helped it get even bigger. I personally found the game a little too challenging to push through to completion, though regret it regularly. However, the sequel to the excellent moody Metroid-Vania is on the way.
“Hollow Knight: Silksong” is Team Cherry’s follow up. It was originally going to be DLC but apparently “Silksong” got too big. Now it is looking to be a full-blown game. And that is super exciting for so many. Sadly, this title was set for a 2019 release initially but now we don’t really know. I hope that the developers take their time if they honestly need it to make sure that the once-little expansion can turn out to be an awesome “Hollow Knight” sequel.
Super Meat Boy Forever
“Super Meat Boy” is one of the most recognizable titles in the gaming industry, especially for indies. When its sequel was announced, naturally a lot of hype was built up. Unfortunately, “Super Meat Boy Forever” feels like it is really taking its time to come out. The sequel was revealed in 2017 and was set to be out the next year and most definitely planned for a 2019 release afterwards.
As someone who loved the first game and adore platformers like it, I am really excited for “Super Meat Boy Forever” and want it as soon as possible. I do however respect the incredibly small team that is Team Meat and I’d rather them take their time, as much time as needed, to get the game out in the best form it can be without making them kill themselves over it.
Those are just a few of the games that were supposed to be out in 2019. At this point in time, it is more than safe to say they aren’t going to be out before the year ends. But here is to hoping these games will be out whenever they are ready in the best form they can be. So let me know in the comments below which of these games you were disappointed to see slip by 2019. Alternatively, which other games were you hoping to play in 2019 but unfortunately will not?
