Nintendo unveiled everything from the entire roster of “Super Smash Bros Ultimate” to a brand new single player adventure in today’s Direct. The announcements took up 40 minutes of content with a wide range of quality in each of the reveals. Overall, anything covering one of the most ambitious and celebratory games this year is exciting. These are Nintendo’s “Super Smash Bros Ultimate’s” announcements that had me the most thrilled.

Online Improvements
Gone are the days of “For Glory” and “For Fun,” as “Super Smash Bros Ultimate offers a multitude of ways to customize your online experience.

The title, for starters, will allow players to choose their preferred rules for matches, whether that be the type of items and their likelihood of appearing or mode choice like stock or time. From there, it was explained that the game will attempt to matchmake you with other players interested in the same kind of rules, of course prioritizing player proximity as well.

The game offers players a worldwide ranking system, allowing them to be all the more competitive. Global Smash Power lets players see where they stand among the best of the best, all while earning player-customized Smash Tags. These Smash Tags, made to the liking of the players, isn’t lost when they lose a match; however, the opponent who beats them does earn a copy in a way, opening the door for collection that represents just how good you are.

Alongside exciting quality of life features for “Super Smash Bros Ultimate’s” online mode, there are, of course, multiple game modes. Whether you wish to spectate others to learn their patterns or see the best players around go at it, or you’re interested in taking on duos of players with a friend, the online portion of “Super Smash Bros Ultimate” is anything but limited.

Post-Launch Content
In today’s age, even Nintendo supports their games post-launch. “Super Smash Bros for Wii U” had its own DLC characters and this title is no different. Nintendo confirmed five waves of DLC for “Super Smash Bros Ultimate” set for release over the next year or so.

The game’s post-launch releases were each confirmed to include one new fighter, one new stage and multiple music tracks. Each will be $5.99 but a season pass including all five waves of DLC will be available at $24.99.

Masahiro Sakurai was still unable to confirm just who and what will come with this DLC; however, one announcement came separately from it altogether. That is Piranha Plant as a playable character. This odd but pleasing character reveal is one that won’t be in the game come its December 7 launch. Announced to be coming some time a couple months after release as a free character, Piranha Plant is quite the surprise, arguably more unexpected than the final roster reveals themselves.

Spirits Mode

Long-rumored, Spirit Mode was officially confirmed in today’s Nintendo Direct. The mode offers players the opportunity to see dozens of fan-favorite characters from across Nintendo and non-Nintendo franchises alike.

Spirits Mode lets “Super Smash Bros Ultimate” players customize a loadout of sorts using other non-playable characters, or “Spirits,” as assists. The characters provide boosts and unique power-ups to your fighters of choice. This mode allows the player to augment their choice of Spirit and decide which is the best for their playable fighter.

The customization and depth of Spirits Mode seems to be a fresh take on the traditional “Super Smash Bros” formula, one that will offer some interesting player diversity and choice. This mode also, of course, brings together gaming characters of all sorts into the mix, further pushing the “ultimate” in the crossover that is “Super Smash Bros Ultimate.”

The Final Roster
Nintendo confirmed this would be the last Direct surrounding “Super Smash Bros Ultimate’s” release on December 7. The game’s final presentation decidedly revealed the last of the game’s roster, capping it off at a whopping 74 fighters.

The final two characters were revealed in a very fitting cinematic, those being Ken from “Street Fighter” and Incineroar from “Pokemon.” The two fighters were shown in a ring taking on Little Mac, starting with Ken packing a punch of his own on the “Punch Out” boxer. The cinematic reveal was as exciting as the rest for “Super Smash Bros Ultimate’s” marketing due to just how perfect the setting and tone was for the new characters.

Once the reveals of the two new fighters came to an end, I had personally expected one more; however, Ken and Incineroar were exciting newcomers nonetheless. With the fan outcry for these two and the inevitability of Ken being Ryu’s Echo Fighter, this was a pleasant reveal, one that wrapped up the game’s final roster well enough. Perhaps with the DLC, Geno, Isaac and Skull Kid will still have a chance yet.

Story Mode
Thanks to the exhilarating cutscenes alone, the Subspace Emissary holds some of my best memories of “Super Smash Bros Brawl.” With the lack of a story or adventure mode in the previous title, I, like many other fans out there, could only have dreamed of one making its way over to “Super Smash Bros Ultimate.” It sounds like Sakurai has listened, as the presentation closed off with the reveal of just that.

Sakurai admitted that gameplay is emphasized further than story in this year’s adventure mode but nevertheless, World of Light looks quite impressive. The scene-stealing gathering of many of the roster’s characters in a gorgeously animated cutscene drew in the excitement instantly. From there, not only did the story mode trailer offer voice acting but also some epic moments of a new threat, one that would take everybody out, everybody but Kirby.

Titled “World of Light,” “Super Smash Bros Ultimate’s” story mode looks to include cutscenes with an even higher production value than the awesome ones of 2008’s Subspace Emissary. World of Light’s gameplay on the other hand, while simply teased, may raise a few questions of its own until release.

Looking similar to that of Smash Tour, the far-less regarded single player mode from “Super Smash Bros for Wii U,” World of Light’s gameplay isn’t entirely clear as to just what it plays like. The many encounters against a variety of characters and Spirits alike, including an appearance of Subspace Emissary’s Galleom coupled with the stunning cutscenes and seemingly exciting story do however make this new adventure mode one worth talking about.

Those are the announcements that stood out the most to me in today’s Nintendo Direct. “Super Smash Bros Ultimate’s” news has seemingly all been given to us and I couldn’t be more excited for December 7. What do you think? What reveal from the “Super Smash Bros Ultimate” Direct was your favorite? What’s the first mode you’re going to play come launch? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.
